As a family with two little boys we said good bye to our family, friends, playgroup, beaches, playgrounds and everything we held dear for a two year adventure. Destination: Denver, Colorado. What did we know about it? John Denver liked it around here didnt he?

Toddlers embrace a new world with the wonder, enthusiasm and passion. Charlie said to me the other day. "Mum I just learnt about fall, its like autumn... but do pumpkins fall from the sky in fall?" I want to look at this adventure with the same sense of fun. So this is my attempt....

About a Corn Maze

The last hot weekend of fall. It will be snowing by wednesday, and Andy is very keen to get to a corn maze.  So keen we arrived at 9.10 to find it didnt open till noon.  So we went for a walk...

Built a bridge and crossed it....

Had some hot chocolate (clever mum)

Found some barrels to ride in....

Finally the corn maze...hot, tired, hungry, lost...

Lucky for corndogs...food on a stick that can be eaten on the way home..

Colour Treasure Hunt

Today to make the walk to the park more interesting we went on a colour treasure hunt.  It was a surprising success.
So.... I got two egg containers and put a little colour sticker on each pot.

And then we started collecting.  We even got some help from a friendly gardener on the way who also gave us some seeds to plant in the garden.
The best bit is we can use them again if I hide them for a week or two!

Tom's Train Cake

So it was a hot day and I was a little unwilling to make enormous amounts of blue icing which led to a rather floppy Thomas cake but it did taste pretty good.

Daddy's Humpty Dumpty Cake

Cream and Strawberries in the middle...
made it a little wonky but yummier....and we were proud.
And Dad was happy.

AWWW Cake Book

The Australian Womens Weekly Birthday Cake Book has made it to Denver.  A book treasured by all children in the 80's in Australia is now giving my children plenty to drool about. We have made a pact that all birthday cakes will be made from this book while we are here.

Charlie On: Talent

Charlie asked me the other day..
"What does talent mean?"
I said "It is something you like to do, that you are good at."
Charlie said "My talent is eating cake".

Very true Charlie...you are a champion cake eater.

Pumpkin Carving

On a lovely crisp fall afternoon we went to a pumpkin carving at a friends house.
Things we learnt:
- Play lots of Whats the time Mr Wolf and Dodge Ball before getting near the pumpkins to wear off energy

- Stickers work better than knife wielding toddlers!

- Its messy

- Tom would probably rather eat pumpkin pie...

- Mum and Dad do most of the work!

Charlie On: Growing

While listing to a song about beautiful babies in the car.  Charlie turns to Tom and says, "We've done babies, we are boys now"

Rainbow Picture

When we moved here Charlie was going through a rainbow phase.  Lovely Lou gave us a piece of material for christmas to do with as we pleased.  Here is the result in Charlie's room in 'yellow house':

And in the boys room in 'Green & Bricks' house it catches the light and glows during the day.

Jack and the beanstalk

We make a beanstalk out of lego with all the characters and then act out the story.  The best bit is chopping down the beanstalk at the end.

Peter Combe has put the story to song.  Here are the words:

Fe Fi Fo Fum I smell the blood of an englishman, be him alive or be him dead Ill grind his bones to make my bread. (bang floor during)

Jack climbed the beanstalk, he was only ten years old.
And watched as the giant, was counting out his gold.
The giant soon got sleepy and then began to snore.
And Jack grapped the bag of gold and quickly scampered out the door.

And down the beanstalk Jack scurried..close to the ground he jumped and hurried..back to his Mum who was very worried.  Look Mum..we don't have to be poor anymore.

Fe Fi etc

Jack climbed the beanstalk, on the very next day again.
And saw the giant wide awake, talking to his hen
Lay me a golden egg, he heard the giant say.
And when the giant fell asleep, Jack stole that hen away..

And down the beanstalk ......etc

Fe Fi etc

Jack's mother begged him, to never climb up again.
But Jack said just one more time and that will be the end.
So he crept up to the giant, who was playing a magic harp.
And quick as a flash and without a sound Jack snatched it in the dark

And down the beanstalk......etc........who was very worried, one blow with the axe down under, the giant fell with a crash like thunder.  Look Mum, the giants dead.  And we dont have to be poor anymore.

Fe Fi etc.

A Useful Box

I am sick of all those little things that I collect and need to give or return to people.
I currently have Maddeus' book, a CD for Letia, some undies of Simones, a t-shirt of Haydens, 2 library books and a dvd, a stroller and baby backpack (okay the last two won't fit in my new box).

Happy Acorns

This came from an attempt to stay at home all afternoon....so hard for us.
First collect your acorns.  A tambourine might be required to give the walk to the tree 5 houses down a little more drama and atmosphere.

Draw on your acorns with markers..

Happy Acorns!
...and some cross and surprised ones too..

Recipe for a picnic

When the weather is still warm and there is no proper food in the fridge.....put apples, cold chicken, carrot sticks, apple sauce and corn chips in small bowls.  Throw down a blanket topped with every soft toy in house.  Watch the whole lot get devoured in a way it never would in the house. Dont forget to put a few bits of apple in the tree for the squirrel. Done.

Pretty Things

This is my collection of pretty thrift store things that help to make me feel more cosy and settled in my home.
They live in my favourite piece of furniture.
